Where is King Tutankhamun's tomb?

The tomb is KV62 in the Valley of the Kings, on Luxor's west bank. Howard Carter and his team discovered it in 1922. Unlike the vast, lavishly painted tombs of some other pharaohs, Tutankhamun's is comparatively small; only its burial chamber has decorated walls. Its remarkable contents made it one of archaeology's most famous discoveries.

The tomb was relatively intact, not untouched. Carter's records show signs of ancient robberies, yet his team documented 5,398 objects. Imagine entering rooms crowded with chariots, couches, boxes, jewelry and equipment prepared for a king's afterlife. The small things can be just as absorbing as the gold: sandals and gaming pieces bring a young person's world into view.

Where is Tutankhamun's mummy?

Where are King Tut's golden mask and treasures?

Head to the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza. Its dedicated galleries bring together more than 5,000 objects from the tomb for the first time, including the celebrated golden burial mask. Many of these treasures were previously displayed at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, so older photographs and travel articles may point you there.

Look beyond the mask, too. The museum's collection includes a gold-covered throne showing the young king and queen beneath the sun's rays and a gilded canopic shrine made to protect his internal organs after mummification. These pieces tell stories of royal life, craftsmanship and beliefs about the afterlife.

Tutankhamun was buried inside three nested coffins within a stone sarcophagus. The innermost coffin is solid gold and weighs about 110.4 kilograms (243 pounds). The often repeated figure of 450 pounds for this coffin is incorrect.

How did King Tut die?

Tutankhamun became king at about nine years old and died around the age of 18. His exact cause of death remains uncertain. Researchers have explored possible injuries and illnesses, but the evidence does not establish that he was murdered. The unanswered question is part of the story; the objects he left behind offer a much clearer glimpse of his world.
