The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is a groundbreaking cultural project located beside the legendary Pyramids of Giza, only 2 km west of the Great Pyramid itself. Once officially opened, it will be the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization — Ancient Egypt.
Spanning more than 500,000 m², GEM will house over 100,000 artefacts, including the complete treasures of Tutankhamun’s tomb, displayed together for the first time in history. Beyond a traditional museum, GEM is envisioned as a living cultural campus — combining exhibition halls, research and conservation centers, children’s museums, and outdoor spaces with panoramic views of the desert and pyramids.
The concept of the Grand Egyptian Museum was born in 1992, driven by the need for a modern facility to replace the crowded Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square. An international architectural competition in 2002 attracted more than 1,500 proposals from around the world. The winning design by Heneghan Peng Architects (Ireland) seamlessly merges contemporary geometry with the timeless spirit of ancient Egypt.
Construction began in 2005, supported by international funding and the Egyptian government. Despite challenges, the GEM project has evolved into one of the most ambitious cultural developments in the modern Arab world.
After several delays — including during the pandemic years — Egypt celebrates its grand official opening on November 4, 2025, coinciding with the 103rd anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb by Howard Carter in 1922, marking a new chapter for cultural tourism.
The museum’s architecture embodies Egypt’s balance between heritage and innovation. Its façade of translucent alabaster and sand-colored stone glows under the desert sun, while vast glass walls allow natural light to illuminate monumental statues within.
At its heart lies the Grand Hall, home to the colossal statue of King Ramesses II, welcoming visitors with a view that aligns perfectly toward the Pyramids. A monumental Grand Staircase rises through the building, displaying over 80 iconic statues that narrate the evolution of pharaonic art through the ages.
Key architectural highlights include:
Grand Hall & Staircase: Symbolic journey through ancient Egypt.
Tutankhamun Galleries: Over 5,000 treasures, displayed with immersive lighting and multimedia.
Solar Boat Gallery: The restored Khufu ship, preserved in climate-controlled conditions.
Conservation Center: The largest in Africa and the Middle East, open for educational visits.
Panoramic Terrace: Overlooking the Giza Pyramids — a breathtaking photo opportunity.
The Grand Egyptian Museum’s exhibitions trace over 5,000 years of history, from pre-dynastic origins to the Greco-Roman period.
For the first time, all the 5,398 objects from the boy king’s tomb — discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter — will be displayed together. This once-in-a-lifetime collection includes Tutankhamun’s golden mask, jewelry, chariots, beds, and daily life items preserved for eternity.
Other highlights include:
The colossal statue of Ramesses II (83 tons), standing proudly in the atrium.
The Khufu Solar Boat, symbolizing the Pharaoh’s journey to the afterlife.
The Narmer Palette, statues of Hatshepsut, and artifacts from Amarna.
Interactive galleries using holographic projections and augmented reality.
The design allows visitors to travel chronologically through Egypt’s dynasties, revealing the country’s artistic, political, and spiritual evolution.
The museum complex will redefine what it means to experience ancient Egypt. Spacious galleries, digital storytelling, and sensory-rich lighting offer a balance between scholarship and wonder.
